Pyros was part of a bigger winery but now operates on a smaller scale and independently in the Pedernal Valley in the province of San Juan, Argentina. This valley, only relatively recently recognised as an official wine region, contains vineyards at high altitude (up to 1500 metres) with granite, flint and slate soils (pedernal is Spanish for flint). It is widely recognised that the best Argentinian Malbecs are grown at altitude and this Special Blend is produced 70% from Malbec grapes grown at 1400m. The altitude and soils are two reasons why this wine is so complex and intense. Read more on the Malbec grape.
This wine is both complex & elegant, a high-end Argentinian wine. It took my breath away when I first tasted it mid 2018. I've been waiting quite some time for it to be released. My full tasting notes are coming soon but in the interim read what the producer and the wine critics say with the high scores they have awarded the wine.
Allow the wine to breathe for 30 minutes before drinking. This wine may throw off a little sediment so it is a good idea to decant the wine. Read more on decanting.
Recommended to drink with steak (Argentinean of course!), other beef dishes including chilli con carne and other spiced dishes, lamb including tagines, venison, game casseroles, strong flavoured offal, strong cheeses and chocolate
"Pyros Special Blend brings the three grape varieties of the Pedernal Valley into balance, combining them into a single unforgettable experience. Untamed and exquisite. It is made with the best Malbec grapes from selected rows of our Firestone estate (where the soil is extremely rocky, mainly of limestone, flint and granite) and selected rows of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in the upper reaches of Pedernal Valley.
This wine has an intense red colour with purplish hues. It displays complex and elegant aromas combining black fruits, floral, figs and spices. It is dense and elegant on the palate, with great structure, sweet tannins, complex fruit and spiced notes with a mineral hint and gentle acidity. It has a pleasant and lingering finish."

"Inky in colour, as the wines from this valley tend to be, the Special Blend is a cuvée of Malbec with 22% Syrah and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ginger spice and blood orange aromas segue into a dense, ripe, well-balanced red with seamless oak and a mineral finish."

"Green pepper aromas, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice and menthol dominate the nose, followed by an urgent wild berry acidity, offering a welcome lift to a well-structured, persistent finish."

"There is a new red top of the range called the 2012 Special Blend. It is composed of Malbec sourced from plot number five, which has more limestone and stones than the other plots within their Piedra de Fuego estate, complemented with 22% Syrah and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon purchased from a local grower. The aging in oak was extended to 20 months and 30% of the barrels, both French and American, were new. There are hints of licorice and smoke, balsamic and faintly oaky, without excess. The fruit is black rather than red, intermixed with some aromas of violets, quite showy. The palate is lively, with pungent flavors and good acidity, and seems to be developing slowly."
Elegant Malbec blend brimming with fruit aromas and flavours - creamy dark fruits including cherries, plums and blueberries, with coffee and smoky spices - pepper and cinammon; a complex wine that is lovely and smooth in texture and very elegant
