Château Montaud is in the heart of Provence, in the Pierrefeu area which since 2013 has had its own appellation, Côtes de Provence Pierrefeu because of its unique terroirs. The red iron-rich sandy-clay soils contribute to the complexity and minerality of this lovely rosé. The Ravel family has been producing wines there for three generations - and have found evidence that the Romans had vineyards there quite some time before them. Sustainability is at the core of all they do and they use integrated farming techniques - tilling, manual work on the vines and minimal intervention - they have Haute Valeur Environmentale certification as proof of their environmentally friendly practices.
If you have been following me for a while, you will know that I am very fussy about wine generally but particularly about rosé wine. A rosé has to be really special to be included in my portfolio. And so you can expect great things from this, Château Montaud's top wine. Do not confuse this with the straight Château Montaud rosé which is more entry-level; AOP Cotes de Provence Pierrefeu is a step up from straight AOP Cotes de Provence with stricter regulations and lower yields.
You will not be disapointed with this Provence Pierrefeu rosé wine produced from Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah grapes - in this instance 50%, 30%, 10% and 10% respectively. Pierrefeu wines are known for their minerality but in addition to mineral notes, this wine is bursting with fruit aromas and flavours - red fruits - raspberry and redcurrant - also cherries and some floral notes. The wine is dry, with crisp acidity and a long mineral and fruity finish.
Like many rosé wines, this is a great wine for drinking as an aperitif or with food; it is very versatile and it is easier to list the foods that you might want to avoid with this wine - butter based sauces, creamy sauces, curry, strong cheeses.
The producer recommends it as an aperitif with canapés or fresh cold meats and with seafood, Mediterranean cuisine, vegetable flan, exotic and Japanese cuisine.

The top rosé wine from Château Montaud, is this Cotes de Provence Pierrefeu; a complex blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah so lots of red fruits, cherries and mineral notes from the iron-rich soils. A lovely organic (certified) Provence rosé
