Tasting Notes

This has been my favourite champagne for many years after discovering it and its impressive buildings on a trip to Epernay. At the time it was impossible to find de Castellane in the UK but fortunately things have changed since then. This is not necessarily one of the big, well-known brands but it is a really classy champagne.

On a recent trip back to de Castellane I learned that the merger of de Castellane and Laurent Perrier several years ago was a result of a marriage between members of the two families and that de Castellane will fortunately always be maintained as a separate brand.

Produced from a fairly balanced blend of the three champagne grapes - 35% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier -  this non-vintage champagne has around 15% reserve wine added in order to maintain year on year a consistently fine and fresh style. It is lovely and biscuity on the nose with apricots and floral notes. The texture is silky with long-lasting bubbles. The palate is complex, very creamy with apricots, vanilla and warm spices; the finish is long and creamy yet dry. It really hits the spot every time.

This champagne is also available as a gift or one bottle pack.

Food Pairing

Drink on its own, with canapés, smoked salmon and other oil fish like mackerel, caviar, shellfish including lobster, fish, chicken, turkey, mushrooms, truffles, parmesan cheese, sheep's cheese, mildly spiced South East Asian food, fruit based desserts

Producer's Notes

"Pale gold in colour, with a fine and generous mousse. On the nose, notes of white flowers, fresh fruit compote and hints of brioche give the wine its elegance and finesse. On the palate there are hints of vanilla, white fruits and gingerbread."

"This member of the Laurent Perrier family was rather impressive – certainly on the nose which is relatively complex and quite deep-flavoured. The wine is not over-dosed – in fact tastes bone dry – but on the palate there is a slight dilution."

Silver Medal Sommelier Wine Awards 2013

A sophisticated though less well-known champagne that would hold its own against some of the bigger brands; lovely and biscuity on the nose, complex, creamy palate with apricots and floral notes
