On its way into the warehouse is this 2016 vintage. This is a lovely, classic Burgundian Pinot Noir. Six generations of the Bachey-Legros family have worked on this small domaine, the character of the wines coming from the old vines - the vines in the walled Clos des Hâtes vineyard, surrounded by Santenay Premier Cru sites, were planted in 1935. The low-yielding vines and terroir translate into very concentrated grapes.
Fruits including red cherries, blackcurrants and raspberries dominate the nose and there is a hint of that familiar vegetal aroma found in developing top class Burgundies. On the palate black fruits give way to sweet, ripe, red fruits on a lovely long finish; the texture is sublime, very smooth, the wine medium-bodied, the acidity still relatively crisp but will soften further and the tannins evident but fine.
This wine drinks very well now but the smoky tannins, acidity and rich fruits indicate that it will develop further in the bottle.
Recommended to drink with roast chicken, turkey, guinea fowl, duck, goose, pheasant, pigeon, veal, calves liver, lamb, pork, mushroom based dishes. Ideal with a traditional Christmas turkey meal.
"Les Hâtes is one of the best terroirs in Santenay village. We could discuss its ranking for hours, so close is it to a Premier Cru; close both in geography since it is literally surrounded by Santenay Premiers Crus and also in quality. Our plot is in the heart of the Les Hâtes climat, in le Clos.
The fact that the vines grow in an enclosed clos gives this unique wine all its particularity and specificity. The vines are protected and the soil subjected very little to erosion, on well-drained, rather calcareous land on a gentle slope.
The terroir has therefore kept all its integrity and the old vines, planted in 1935, are perfect in getting the best from it. They have maintained an exceptional state of health and their yield self-regulates quite naturally.
When harvested the grapes show lovely concentration with a lot of different-sixed, millérandé berries. Our Clos des Hâtes has a strong personality with good minerality, with tannins that are pure bred from the beginning. On the nose this wine does a balancing act between the depth of fully ripe black fruits and the freshness of red fruits, with lovely hints of spice."
RobertParker.com said of the winery in June 2014:
"I was intrigued to learn that six generations of the Bachey family have run this domaine. Nothing unusual about that, but each of those generations has been an only child. There are presently 18 hectares under vine in the appellations of Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Maranges, with a healthy stock of old-vine material. Today it is Christiane who runs the domaine with her two sons, Samuel and Lenaic. This was a fine set of wines that come recommended."
