Tasting Notes

The story

I couldn't resist posting this picture of the beautiful Castello Tricerchi estate.
Castello Tricerchi.jpg
I am always on the lookout for good quality & good value Brunello di Montalcino. As I'm sure you are aware they can be eye-wateringly expensive partly due to the ageing period before the wines are released for sale. But this one fits the bill perfectly.

The wine

This award-winning Brunello di Montalcino is a really special wine; it will not disappoint if you like developed Sangiovese. It may need to be decanted because of a little sediment but also because its savoury aromas may need a little time to open up and reveal the underlying fruits. On the palate, there are many flavours - fruit including sour cherries, plums, red fruits - redcurrants and cranberries - plus spice, cedar, vanilla and a tomato-savouriness.

The wine has been aged in barrel for three years and then in bottle for a further year before release. It can be aged for much longer still if you can resist it but it is drinking very nicely now.

It is a fine example of a well structured, traditional style Brunello, fine subtle tannins, juicy fruits and a medium-body.

Food Pairing

The producer suggests that this wine is "perfect with meat, ripe cheese or for meditation." It is sufficiently structured to cope with big meat dishes such as game, goose, steak, braised beef, offal and rustic stews. Mushroom dishes are a good match and milder cheeses including goats' and sheeps' cheese.

Producer's Notes

"The Brunello shows the personality and nobility of the grape handpicked in the Vigna del Velo, in the Vigna del Castello and Vigna dei Cipressi.

Appearance: limpid, deep ruby
In glass aroma: tasteful, fruity, red cherry and cherry confiture with sottobosco [forest floor] aroma. Lightly spicy, with notes of tobacco, chocolate and leather
In mouth sensations: warm, smooth, fruity. Fine tannins and full body. Balanced with long fruit finish

Final comment: complex, elegant, harmonious. Better after 2015."

"Elegant nose where brambly fruit aromas mingle with developed notes of mushroomy forest floor. Classy freshness on the palate, and a salty finish."

"This is a plump and fruit-forward Sangiovese that is infused with spice, tobacco and balsam herb. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is defined by its rich texture and layered mouthfeel. Those layers peel back showing bright cherry and blackberry at the core. Some 12,000 bottles were produced.

In 2017, Castello Tricerchi signed on with consulting enologist Maurizio Castelli. The estate is also tweaking its winemaking philosophy and is switching over to traditional oak casks for aging. The results so far are elegant and fine."

"You'll find aromas of wild berry, blue flower and a whiff of dark culinary spice on this medium-bodied red. The straightforward palate offers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and a hint of tobacco alongside polished tannins. Drink 2019–2025."

A fine example of a well structured, traditional style Brunello, fine subtle tannins, juicy fruits and a medium-body; a really special wine
