Tasting Notes

Nero d'Avola is a Sicilian grape variety well suited to the heat of the island and producing mainly soft fruity red wines like this one from family-run winery, Caruso & Minini, which is certified organic and has been producing wine for four generations.

Just 50% of the wine is aged for just two months in very large oak barrels so that the influence is more on the body of the wine than on the flavours. Fruits dominate the palate, mainly black fruits, mulberries, plums and blueberries, the body is medium and the tannins very soft. All in all a very easy-to-drink organic red wine that is very food-friendly.

Food Pairing

As the tannins are light and the fruit flavours dominate, this is a red wine that could be consumed with fish without overpowering it. However this wine has a savouriness that would also match well with tomato-based sauces, Italian grilled vegetables and with a favourite of mine, Melanzane alla Parmigiana.

Producer's Notes

"Fruity and vibrant Nero d’Avola finds a balance of soft tannins and a harmonic finish. Aromas and flavours of violets, dried herbs, juicy plum and blueberries. Fresh and supple, with the sweet fruit leading to a crisp long finish."

"Juicy mulberry nose, turning a bit more savoury on the palate. Roasted mulberries, mushrooms in tamari, balsamic notes and a wonderful wild bramble-berry character. So juicy and jiving with spectacularly fresh acidity. The tannins are little more firm than on their Naturalmente Bio Perricone, but they're perfectly pitched. Wow, these Caruso & Minini wines have never been better! VGV" (Very good value)

Lovely fruity red wine this Sicilian wine is produced from the Nero d'Avola grape. The structure comes from lees ageing as it spends a minimal time in oak, the flavours include black cherries, blueberries and plums and the wine has a lovely fresh style
