Nero d'Avola is a Sicilian grape variety well suited to the heat of the island and producing mainly soft fruity red wines like this one from family-run winery, Caruso & Minini, which is certified organic and has been producing wine for four generations.
Just 50% of the wine is aged for just two months in very large oak barrels so that the influence is more on the body of the wine than on the flavours. Fruits dominate the palate, mainly black fruits, mulberries, plums and blueberries, the body is medium and the tannins very soft. All in all a very easy-to-drink organic red wine that is very food-friendly.
As the tannins are light and the fruit flavours dominate, this is a red wine that could be consumed with fish without overpowering it. However this wine has a savouriness that would also match well with tomato-based sauces, Italian grilled vegetables and with a favourite of mine, Melanzane alla Parmigiana.
