As one of the winemakers, Anna Flowerday, is Australian, you might be surprised to find that this Syrah is much more like a Northern Rhône Syrah than a big, brash Shiraz from neighbouring Australia. The wine will be best enjoyed if decanted first as the fruit flavours need some air in order to emerge from under the savoury notes on the nose.
It is worth the wait though as fruits like mulberries and ripe plums come to the fore especially on the palate, with some berries and cream. The wine is complex as it also displays black pepper, spice, coffee and vanilla. The finish is surprisingly fruity, the tannins very soft and the wine very mouth-watering. This is an elegant and complex Syrah.
This wine would match well with game, venison, roast chicken, pork, beef, lamb and veal. It copes well with creamy dishes, the fruit cutting through the cream, and fresh herb flavours.
"Syrah is a labour of love for us at Te Whare Ra. There are only a handful of producers here who make it - so it is a bit of a left field for Marlborough - but our site is warmer than many which means we have the length of growing season required and our soil type is well suited. This wine is our fifth release of Syrah...
This Syrah exhibits fragrant notes of mulberry, black pepper and ripe plum with hints of mocha, coffee and some complex savoury undertones. The ripe, supple tannins combine with concentrated flavours of mulberries and omega plums and spice. The palate carries onto more savoury and complex flavours and finishes with a lingering persistence of fruit, fine tannin and well integrated oak."
It's quite rare to find Syrah from Marlborough New Zealand but TWR has a very suitable vineyard and produces this organic Syrah more in the Northern Rhône Syrah style than the brash Australian Shiraz style. Savoury, pepper and dark berry aromas & flavours with soft tannins
