I have been eulogising not only the organic and bio-dynamic credentials of Reyneke wines but also their ethical credentials - and this wine has to be the epitome of all three. Not only is Reyneke Cornerstone certified as organic and biodynamic but proceeds of this wine help Reyneke farm workers and their families with education, housing and retirement benefits. As the winery say "At Reyneke we believe that the workers are the cornerstone of the business, which is an integral part of the holistic and biodynamic principles, that Reyneke follows."
I have been following this wine for two or three years but waited until now to add it to the portfolio as I think the 2017 vintage is outstanding. Comprising 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Cabernet Franc and 14% Merlot matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, only 30% of which are new to avoid too strong an oak influence, it is a true Bordeaux blend. And with the usual Reyneke non-interventional approach in the vineyard and in the winery it is complex.
This is a deep-coloured wine and as you would expect black fruits dominate the intense aromas and flavours particularly blackcurrants & blackberries. But there is so much more going on - dark chocolate, cinammon, a distinctly mineral character plus floral and herbal notes. The dry granitic edge is counter-balanced with a whoosh of mouth-watering acidity which stays on the long blackcurrant finish.
This wine can be enjoyed now but will keep for a few years yet. It is worth giving this wine chance to open up by opening the bottle an hour or so before starting to drink, by swirling the wine in your glass and by slurping in air as you taste it.
A really good steak would be the perfect match for this wine as would other red meats.
"This classical Bordeaux style blend combines freshness with real concentration, showcasing the best of Stellenbosch. Intense notes of blackcurrant, star anise, thyme with underlying dark fruit complete the nose of this blend. A core of dark fruit on the palate, combined with a good tannin structure and great complexity, makes this wine linger on the palate."

A feel-good wine in more ways than one, this organic & biodynamic, vegan Bordeaux blend from South Africa acknowledges Reyneke's farm workers as the cornerstone of the business; proceeds from the wine go to their education, housing & retirement annuities. And it tastes amazing!
