I admit I am a sucker for Rioja -but it has to be a good one - like this Pujanza Rioja from its Valdepoleo vineyard, produced by owner / winemaker, Carlos San Pedro. After helping his father in the vineyard since he was a child, Carlos set up Pujanza as his own project at the age of just 25 with the aim "to focus on the land so as to know and understand perfectly each of his plots and the behaviour of the grape varieties depending on the conditions of each year". He looks at, smells and tastes wine from 7 plots within the Valdeporeo vineyard that are all worked differently according to the terroir. These seven wines are blended to a different "recipe" each year to produce a unique Rioja.

Only Tempranillo is used for this wine, fermented in stainless steel rather than oak and aged in large, more subtle French, rather than American, oak barrels to allow the fruit aromas to dominate. Red berries are the theme though you can also smell and taste hints of blackberries and blueberrie, together with spices and a subtle hint of chocolate and leather. The tannins are smooth having softened since the many wine critics awarded this wine its high scores.

Food Pairing

Recommended to drink with game, duck, goose, steak and other red meats, paella - or on its own. This wine would benefit from being allowed to breathe for an hour before consumption

Producer's Notes

"APPEARANCE: Black-cherry colour, clear and bright. NOSE: Attractive and suggestive. Intense, warm aromas, basically of red-berry fruit with subtle notes of black fruit, reminders of scented blossom and tertiary nuances. Fresh and complex. PALATE: Delicate with a very round attack. It is a harmonious, complex wine with body and backbone, polished tannins and no sharp edges. Very well-balanced."

"Tight and focused red... polished tannins and a long, intense finish."

"...combining intensity with focus, freshness and serious tannins."

"I also tasted the slightly riper 2017 Finca Valdepoleo, a more powerful expression of the vineyard when tasted next to the 2016, without the finesse of it. This is juicy and round, powerful, with abundant tannins and the chalky texture of the limestone soils, with elegance. It's young but approachable, with good balance and with stuffing to develop, a modern version of the 2015 with a little more power."

Single vineyard Rioja that's intense, fresh and elegant; complex in character, it combines wine from seven different plots blended to ensure the best quality & taste. The wine critics also love it a lot!
