Tasting Notes

Some white Riojas can taste a little bitter so I have struggled to find one worthy of Wines With Attitude ®. However I'm a big fan of the Remelluri winery and Telmo Rodriguez so I could not ignore their top white Rioja, Remelluri Blanco. It's something of a cult wine, a beautiful field blend of nine different white wine varieties permitted in the Rioja appellation.

Field blends are sometimes looked down upon as winemakers simply even lazily blending together all the different grapes in their vineyards but this one has been a pet project of Telmo for some years and his view is very much that terroir is king rather than any one grape variety and that this field blend expresses perfectly the terroir of the relatively high altitude vineyards in Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. In this wine from old vines on the Remelluri estate owned by Telmo & his sister Amaia, minimal intervention is practised and the wine is certified organic

Some of the grapes included in the blend are Garnacha Blanca, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay - but no Viura, which is the mainstay of most white Riojas. The result is a complex, multi-faceted wine with beautiful aromas and flavours of ripe pears, stone fruits, cream, ginger and chamomile. The wine is full-bodied especially as this was a warm vintage and texture is creamy and well rounded. It lingers on the taste buds long after it has been swallowed. This wine is a real treat, one to savour!

Food Pairing

Recommended for drinking with oysters, other shellfish and fish generally.  It also matches well with herb-based dishes, roast chicken, creamy sauces, tagines, sweet potatoes, parsnips, butternut squash and creamy cheeses. But best of all is savouring a glass on its own!

Producer's Notes

"The nose is very complex, showing notes of butter, walnuts, quince, ginger, cedar and very ripe pears. It shows a lot of character on the palate with a nervous acidity balanced by its deep concentration and creamy, full body. The finish is very elegant and long."

Awards

Not yet rated but here's what RobertParker.com said about the 2017 vintage:
93 points     RobertParker.com     Feb 2018

"2017 was marked by the frost on the 27th of April and the warm summer, which resulted in a very early harvest of a small crop that produced a 2017 Blanco with high ripeness. The grapes from the high-altitude, organically farmed vines fermented with indigenous yeasts in small vats and oak casks, and the wine matured in oak foudres and 1,200-liter concrete eggs for 12 months. This is a bit more generous and exotic than the more austere 2016 I tasted last time—it has more volume and is rounder and mellower. It represents the character of the year, more Mediterranean, with notes of hay and straw, reflecting more the character of the Garnacha Blanca."
