Tasting Notes

The story

Ribeiro del Duero one of those wine regions in Spain that doesn't always get the attention it deserves. It is something of a well-kept secret. It can be expensive but it is usually worth it.

I have been a fan of the producers of this wine, Hermanos Pérez Pascuas, for many years. They never disappoint. This winery, a veteran and considered a pioneer in Ribera del Duero, began activities in 1980, when three brothers, Benjamín, Manuel and Adolfo Pérez Pascuas, convinced of the excellent potential that lay in the vineyards owned by their father, Mauro, decided to initiate an ambitious project: 'to make one of the best wines in Spain and to carve a niche for it in the international marketplace'.

The wine

This is a top class Ribeiro del Duero. Full tasting notes are on their way.

The grapes are selected in the vineyard i.e. only the best are selected; fermentation takes place with natural yeasts and ageing is in oak barrels for 18 months (vs 12 months minimum required for Ribeiro del Duero Crianza wines). The wine is bottled without filtering or fining so there may be some sediment.

Food Pairing

Recommended to drink with game, duck, goose, steak and other red meats, poultry, cheese, charcuterie and paella

Producer's Notes

A rational and demanding viticulture and a brilliant vinification have led to this Viña Pedrosa, which brings together all those virtues found only in great wines: meaty, sumptuous and characterful, with abundant fruit, glycerine, tannins and toasted oak.

"... This wine is pure Tempranillo cropped from a vintage that the Pérez Pascuas family considers perfectly ripe but with freshness, complexity and elegance. The wine matured in oak barrels for 18 months. They give importance to vine age, and insist on the traditional head-pruned, dry-farmed vineyards, and for this they use slightly older vines and the élevage mixes newer and older barrels. They tend to replace one-third of barrels every year and use approximately 50/50 French and American oak. This has an elegant texture with very fine tannins and very good freshness. This is as classical as it gets in Ribera del Duero, and very representative of the house style, with very clean oak and balance to develop for a very long time. A benchmark for Crianza wines from Ribera del Duero."

"Lean and focused, this red delivers cranberry, licorice, spice and orange peel flavors that mingle over light tannins and tangerine acidity. Crisp and lively."

Classical Ribeiro del Duero & according to RobertParker.com "a benchmark for Ribeiro del Duero Crianza" with 92 Parker Points. One of my favourite wines for many years, this 100% Tempranillo is consistently superb.
