Tasting Notes

You can also buy the 2013 vintage as part of a mixed case of 6 or 12 different wines.

The story

It can be difficult to find decent US wines in the UK and the premium wines tend to be at the top of our price range or above.  Also, as California has suffered in the past from a reputation for producing only high alcohol, over-ripe, jammy “fruit bombs”, care is needed to find wines that combine fresh fruit flavours, structure and elegance. This is one such wine, as is its stable mate, Inglenook Rutherford Zinfandel Edizione Pennino 2013.
1882 was the first vintage produced by Gustave Niebaum on the Inglenook estate that has been owned by Francis Ford Coppola for the last 40 years. Niebaum dug a small cave, pictured on the bottle, to understand better the ideal temperature for barrel ageing.

The wine

This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon at its best.  2012 is considered one of the best vintages in recent history because of near perfect climate conditions in the Napa Valley, which contributed complexity of flavours, concentration and texture to well-made wines such as this.  A deep ruby colour, this wine displays the classic blackcurrant, pencil shavings and leather of Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose.  Flavours abound; intense black fruits – blackcurrant, blackberries and black cherries - combine with chocolate, cedar and smokiness.

This wine has a lot of oomph; aside from the concentration of flavours, it is full-bodied and dusty tannins are evident on the teeth as you would expect from a relatively young Cabernet Sauvignon.  But it is not classified as a Big & Bold wine because it is fantastically smooth and the alcohol is well integrated. If you are a fan of left bank, Cabernet Sauvignon dominated Bordeaux, you should try this wine; no need to wait several years for it to be approachable; although this will develop further over the next 5 to 10 years, it is drinking beautifully now.  A wine for grown ups!

Food Pairing

This is ideal food wine, though lovely on its own; match with beef (the rarer the better), lamb,  turkey, goose and game; also a good match for mushrooms, hard cheeses and mild blue cheeses

Producer's Notes

"Well structured with excellent volume and fine dry tannins, our 1882 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a solid core of dark fruits including blackberries, plums and black cherry, while aromatic notes of dark chocolate, tobacco leaves, smoke, vanilla, toasted oak, and subtle hints of violets add complexity and intrigue. Our 2012 vintage of 1882 will continue to evolve over the next five to ten years."

"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 is round, sweet and voluptuous. Dark red cherry, mocha, cherry jam, spice and new leather are all pushed forward. Drink this juicy, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon over the next few years. There is plenty of near term appeal here. This 1882 is a welcome addition to the Inglenook range, and a terrific value to boot."

“100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Nearly opaque. Intense juicy red and black fruit, sweet vanilla-oak and cocoa-powder aromas. Elegant mouthfeel and balance with enticing fruit, well-integrated oak and the dusty earth. It has a sense of place. Long, elegant, balanced finish. Will improve with time in bottle.”

Cabernet Sauvignon fans need look no further than this; Cabernet Sauvignon at its best, from a great Napa Valley vintage.  Classic blackcurrant, pencil shavings, leather, chocolate and more. Firm tannins as expected from a young Cab Sauv so this will evolve but is drinking fabulously now. This is a wine for grown-ups.
