The Rutherford AVA (American Viticultural Area) in the Napa Valley is renowned for its excellent Cabernet Sauvignon. Its wines are rich and full-flavoured and according to many fans display 'Rutherford Dust'; according to the Rutherford Hills winery "some describe it as a chocolate or coffee taste, while others claim it is more of a texture that creates a full mouthfeel with big and smooth tannins." However it's described, it's delicious!
This is classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, rich, full-flavoured and elegant - though some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is added to boost fruit flavours in the case of Cabernet Franc and colour, tannins and spicy notes in the case of Petit Verdot. This wine displays the classic blackcurrant, pencil shavings and leather of Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose. Flavours abound; intense black fruits – blackcurrant, blackberries and black cherries - combine with chocolate, warm spices, menthol and a hint of smokiness. It is full-bodied and whilst in past vintages dusty tannins have been evident on the teeth in this vintage they are already well-rounded and integrated, in harmony with the fruit and acidity of the wine. This wine will develop further over the next 5 years but is lovely and smooth and is drinking beautifully now.
This is ideal food wine, though lovely on its own; match with beef (the rarer the better), lamb, turkey, goose and game; also a good match for mushrooms, hard cheeses and mild blue cheeses
"This wine provides aromas of cassis, dried strawberry complexed with root beer, tarragon and floral notes. On the palate this bold wine has immense opulent tannins with concentrated fruit flavors of blackberries, raspberries, and cocoa with an espresso finish."
Cabernet Sauvignon fans need look no further than this; Cabernet Sauvignon at its best, from a great Napa Valley vintage. Classic blackcurrant, pencil shavings, leather, chocolate and more. This is a wine for grown-ups.
