Zweigelt is Austria's most-planted black grape variety. Produced in 1922 from a cross of the Blaufränkisch & Saint Laurent grapes, it was orginally called Rotburger but was renamed after its creator, Fritz Zweigelt.
Also known as Blauer Zweigelt, Zweigelt produces a variety of red wine styles but they are most often full-bodied, fruity and taste of black cherries. Zweigelt is also used for ice wine.
