Rhône
The Rhône wine region in South West France is huge and includes 28 appellations ranging from the 17 cru wines like Gigondas AOC & Châteauneuf du Pape AOC at the top through Côtes du Rhône Village AOC wines to Côtes du Rhône AOC wines. You can read more about the different appellations in my Rhône blogpost.
The area as a whole is known mainly for its fruity & spicy red wines and is split between Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône. Northern Rhône reds are Syrah varietal wines (100% Syrah or Shiraz). Southern Rhône reds are usually produced from a blend of GSM (Grenache, Syrah & Mourvèdre). White Rhône wines tend to be a mix of Roussanne, Marsanne & Viognier.
