Tasting Notes

This beautiful port is on offer at £20 (normally £22)

From Churchill Estates whose beautiful red wine made from port grape, Touriga Nacional, I also stock, this port is produced from a blend of indigenous grape varities grown in old vineyards on their own estates in the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro wine region. The grape varieties included are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Tinta Barroca and they are trodden by foot. Late Bottled Vintage port or LBV port is vintage wine aged between 4 and 6 years in large oak vats before bottling in order to soften the tannins making it more approachable upon release than straight vintage port. The aim is also to retain the rich fruit flavours. The port is bottled unfiltered and laid down in bottle to finish its maturation.

It is ready for drinking now and will continue to improve for a few more years gaining in complexity like a young vintage port. As this port is unfiltered, stand the bottle upright for a couple of hours before decanting & leave a couple of hours before serving. Read more about decanting in my blog. Once the bottle is opened drink within 10 days unless using a wine preservation system.

Full tasting note coming soon but in summary this port manages to combine youthful fruitiness - cherries, plums, and strawberries - with dark chocolate and rich sweet spices. It is full-bodied and intense with a long finish. Read more from the wine critics below.

Food Pairing

Recommended on its own after dinner, with rich desserts or with cheeses; it goes especially well with Stilton, Gorgonzola, Roquefort, Parmesan and Camembert.

Producer's Notes

"Churchill’s Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) is produced from the same Quintas that make Churchill’s declared Vintage Ports, so the result is an LBV with a real vintage pedigree: the excellent intensity of fruit and finesse. This wine has a black cherry colour. On the nose, rich blackberry aromas with resinous undertones. The palate is smooth and complex, with juicy flavours of wild berries and black chocolate."

"... This vintage has a perfect balance between the sweetness, the acidity and the fruitiness as well as a perfect tannic structure. As the vintage of 2014, this vintage has one of the best aging potential of all Late Bottled Vintages that I have tasted from Churchill, at least 15 years, if not even more because it has everything that is required from a wine with a long aging potential. Furthermore, the aging will only make it more complex and irresistible to drink. The aroma of the wine is characterized by cocoa-rich dark chocolate, sweet spices such as vanilla, cinnamon and cardamom as well as dried black cherries, dates, grapes, blue plums, sweet tobacco and white pepper. The wine's flavour is characterized by rum raisins, sweet spices, black pepper, cocoa-rich dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, dried black cherries, dates and blue plums. The wonderful taste of cocoa-rich dark chocolate, black pepper and sweet tobacco stays in the mouth forever. Churchill's Late Bottled Vintage 2015 is an absolutely fabulous wine..."

"The nose is fruity and offers elegance, a fine intensity as well as a fine dynamism. It reveals notes of strawberry, cherry and small notes of cassis associated with fine touches of violet as well as fine hints of liquorice, sweet mild tobacco and discreet hints of sweet spices. The palate is fruity, well-balanced and offers minerality, a good definition, a fine suavity as well as tension. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackberry, juicy plum and small notes of juicy/fleshy strawberry associated with touches of cornflower, blueberry, nutmeg and a very discreet almost saline hint. An imperceptible hint of coffee on the persistence."

Elegant, velvety port with rich, complex flavours including red cherries, strawberries, blackcurrant, herbs and sweet spices. Port for port lovers and "an absolutely fabulous wine"
