Hailing from Alicante, an area of Spain better known for holidays than for quality wines, this wine is produced mainly from 60 year old Monastrell or Mourvèdre vines, with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The fluctuation in summer temperatures between day and night means that grapes mature steadily, conserving aroma and acidity. Vinessens is a small family-owned winery, styling itself as a "garage bodega" with sufficiently small production that they can adapt their wine-making techniques depending on each individual grape variety and style of wine.
This wine is big & bold in more ways than one - its 15.5% alcohol level is balanced by the deep intensity of aromas and flavours - without high alcohol, the Monastrell grape has little or no flavour. It cannot be said that this wine has little or no flavour however; it is packed with flavours - blackberry, blueberry and rich dark cherries with a savouriness (think game and truffles), combined with sweetness from the oak.
This wine is a dark ruby red in colour and beautifully fragrant - black fruits and a hint of strawberries. It is very complex and will appeal to those who like full-bodied, "big" flavoured, fairly tannic wines in a more developed style.
Recommended to drink with game, duck, goose, steak and other red meats, paella
