Tasting Notes

Sadly I have no more of the 2002 vintage but the 2004 vintage is still packed full of intense fruit flavours. And for a younger, easy-drinking wine, try the Château Moya.

The story

I was first introduced to Château du Gaby - or Château Gaby as it is now known - several years ago by an ex colleague of mine who knew the then owner, David Curl. Until quite recently David owned this and Château Moya in nearby Castillon - Cotes de Bordeaux - see the 2011 vintage also available from Wines With Attitude®.  I have met the winemaker for both Châteaux, the amiable Damien Landouar, and have been lucky enough to visit Château Gaby with its renowned river view. Fortunately for us Damien remains winemaker at Gaby and Moya under the new ownership.

My ex colleague slipped me several bottles of this 2002 vintage over the years and I was always impressed with the elegance of this wine and with its development. This is an opportunity to acquire a beautifully developing typical Merlot-dominant Right Bank Bordeaux, an elegant, well-structured wine from under-rated appellation, Canon-Fronsac AOC.


The wine

Garnet in colour with some brick-red nuances given the age of the wine.  The nose is full of fruit - damsons, ripe plums, mulberries and hints of raspberries and blackcurrant- and is also showing spice such as cinnamon and vanillin from the oak ageing - split 55% in new barrels and 45% in 1-2 year old barrels. Similar complex fruit flavours on the palate though the oak influence is more obvious in sweet spices and fudge. The wine is well structured with soft integrated tannins and a medium body.

Food Pairing

Recommended with steak, beef casseroles, lamb, chicken, turkey and smooth enough to have with pork dishes. Also good with cheese, tomato-based dishes, mushrooms, roast vegetables etc.

It is worth decanting and letting this wine breathe for an hour or so before serving.  There may be a little sediment.

An elegant, well-structured wine from an under-rated appellation, Canon-Fronsac AOC; an opportunity to acquire a 2002 Bordeaux displaying fruit and spice, with soft tannins. Very smooth
