More detail to follow on Maurizio Alongi. The winery is currently converting to organic farming and vintages post 2018 will be certified organic.
Grapes are handpicked, fermentation with natural yeasts is in a stainless steel tank to preserve fruit flavours; ageing is initially in 550 litre French oak barrels, only 15% of which are new so the oak flavour is quite subtle and after two years the wine is bottled and rests in bottle for a year before release.
This wine was the highlight of my autumn forays to find more wines with attitude. I subsequently found out that Walter Speller of JancisRobinson.com is a fan and has described it as "Simply a gorgeous wine."
Classico means that this wine comes from the hilly historic centre of the Chianti wine region, the area most suited to vine growing. Simple Chianti is likely to be more fruit-forward and as is usually the case very easy to drink. This wine is much more elegant, a smooth and classy bottle of wine to be savoured rather than glugged. Riserva means that it has been aged for longer than straight Chianti Classico, in this instance for three years before release; the extra ageing gives it some savouty notes.
This wine is produced 94% from Sangiovese, 4% Malvasia Nera and 2% Canaiolo, which brings perfume and softens the Sangiovese a little. It has the typical Chianti Classico profile, red fruits like sour cherry, redcurrant with violets and savoury notes on the nose and palate. The initial sharp red fruit hit melts into a mouth-filling and mouth-watering sensation leaving you wanting more. Delicious.
The wine may need time to open up so I recommend that you decant this wine or pour from a height to aerate the wine - your patience will be rewarded. I tasted a bottle over three days - using a wine pump to preserve it in between - and it seemed to get better each time I opened it. A beautiful, very elegant wine.
This is a wine best consumed with food. Recommended to drink with lamb, game, duck, goose, steak and other red meats, and tomato-based dishes - think Italian!
