La Vierge is a relatively young winery based in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth), part of the Walker Bay wine region of South Africa. I used to stock La Vierge's The Affair Pinot Noir but managed to get hold of the 2015 vintage of this 'Noir' Pinot Noir which is a step up. Grapes all come from the relatively recently named ward in the district of Walker Bay, Hemel en Aarde Ridge, which is the smallest ward and has the coolest maritime climate.
Winemaker Christo Kotze aims for clean site-specific wines: the Ridge climate and the heavy clay soils make this perfect for Pinot Noir to express its fruit flavours and to display elegance with a bit of structure. Yields at this winery are low which helps to provide complexity and concentration to the wine.
100% Pinot Noir, this wine demonstrates the red fruit flavours (raspberries & redcurrants) that you would expect from a cool climate Pinot and combines them beautifully more mature baked cherry, spicy and mushroom notes. There are delicate hints of oak from 9 months in barrel (only partly new oak). There is a good balance of mouth-watering acidity with the juicy fruit flavours and a long finish. Plus the texture is really silky. What's not to like?!
Drink with red meat, game, mushroom dishes and hard cheese. A Pinot Noir with low tannins like this one makes a good match for lean beef cuts like fillet of beef.
