We've all heard of Whispering Angel but the best kept secret of the Château d'Esclans stable is its big sister wine, Rock Angel. Previously described as ”a little more soft rock than punk thanks to a little time in the barriques giving a slightly more rounded mouthful”, Rock Angel is produced from Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle (AKA Vermentino). The partial fermentation in barrel gives this rosé a more complex and structured taste profile than Whispering Angel which according to the winemakers brings it "into a more premium realm giving rosé lovers a bigger and richer wine that is fabulous as an aperitif or paired with a broad range of fine cuisine. If you like the minerality of a Sancerre, you will love this wine."
Its very pale colour is misleading as this wine is packed full of flavour - white peach, strawberry, cherries and some citrus and mineral notes. It's medium-bodied and the texture is silky smooth which both contribute to make this a more sophisticated and elegant version of Whispering Angel.
This is a great wine for drinking as an aperitif or with food; it is so versatile that it is easier to list the foods that you might want to avoid with this wine - butter based sauces, creamy sauces, curry, strong cheeses.
Big sister wine to Whispering Angel, Rock Angel rosé has a more rounded and silky smooth mouthfeel; a sophisticated rosé that is very food-friendly
