You may think of very light wines when you think of Muscadet but Muscadet Sèvre et Maine wines are known for being richer and more age-worthy. In addition this Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is from 50 year old vines on the granite soils of the small, Château-Thébaud vineyard in the Loire which add to its complexity.
Château-Thébaud is one of 10 crus communaux in Muscadet; this status is awarded only to a small number of vineyards within the commune and means amongst other things that the wine spends long on the lees than standard Muscadet though strangely they cannot add "sur lie" to their labels.
So the producer is not said Château but Les Bêtes Curieuses, a joint venture between well-known Loire wine producers Jérémie Huchet and Jérémie Mourat. They work together to produce Muscadet wines that express the terroir. Some of the vineyards they focus on were "acquired" from J Huchet's family vineyard, Domaine de la Chauvinière. Their wines are produced using organic practices with no chemical intervention.
This is a beautiful medium to full-bodied dry white wine, very minerally in character from the granite soils with a lovely creamy texture. It is complex having been aged on its lees, "sur lie" with almond and orange flavors and a really long finish. More detailed notes coming soon but in brief this is an amazing white wine.
