Tasting Notes

The Gobin Frères, Christophe and Cédric, are 4th generation family wine-makers practising sustainable agriculture in their 58 hectares in the Loire Valley. Grand Fief de Retail is the name of the vineyard with the 40 to 90 year old vines that produce the Melon de Bourgogne grapes for this Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOP. It is known for its rich wines and the gabbro (like basalt & granite) soils contribute  minerality and complexity. The old vines and lees ageing bring added complexity and body. And in the style of the old-school classic Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie there is a crisp acidity which cuts through that richness.

This is a beautiful medium-bodied dry white wine, not light as you might be more used to seeing in Muscadet - Muscadet Sèvre et Maine wines are known for being richer and more age-worthy than standard Muscadet and this vineyard particularly so. This wine is minerally in character from the granite soils with a lovely creamy texture. Its complex aromas and flavours include stewed apples, almond and orange and it has a really long finish. This is an amazing white wine, drinking well now but it will keep and develop for a number of years.

Food Pairing

Recommended for drinking with oysters, other shellfish and fish generally, chicken  - it will also stand up well to creamy sauces, game, Asian cuisine, tagines, sweet potatoes, parsnips and butternut squash.

Producer's Notes

"GRAND FIEF DE RETAIL - This land is famous for producing some very rich and great wines. The vines are more than 40 years old, and over 90 for some of them. They are situated on a hill, quite high in altitude, what allows a good natural ventilation and good sunlight conditions, and so, a great maturity of the grapes. Wine of great character."

Old vine Muscadet Sèvre et Maine 'sur lie' produced using sustainable practices without chemical intervention. This is a complex wine, medium-bodied, minerally in character with a lovely creamy texture and almond & orange flavors; a lovely dry white wine
