This dry white wine from Côtes Catalanes in the South West of France is a rare find as it's 100% Grenache Gris. Usually it would be seen in blends. Very few vines of this pink-skinned cousin to Grenache Blanc are grown - most are in Languedoc-Rousillon, Southern Rhône and in Spain. Thunevin Calvet's vines are c. 60 years old which gives the wine complexity enhanced by fermentation and ageing in oak. Aromas and flavours abound - apples, citrus, almonds and a hint of fennel and orange-blossom - but it is not a heavy wine. The schistous soils bring a crisp freshness. This is a silky, classy wine. Early tasters have described it as "exquisite" and "a stunner".
Jean-Roger Calvet teamed up with with Jean-Luc Thunevin (owner of Château Vandraud in Saint Emilion) several years ago when he and his family decided to stop taking their grapes to the village cooperative and to start making their own dry still wines in Maury, more renowned for its fortified wines. Now they manage the grapes carefully - they call themselves "eco-responsible" - hand harvesting, hand sorting to remove any raisined berries so that they can retain freshness in the wines etc.
This aromatic yet crisp white wine is a great match for fish and seafood. Given its rather full body, it will also stand up to stronger tasting food. Very food-friendly. The producer says: “It will be in perfect harmony with white meats but also with grilled oysters or fish.”
Translated: "L'Amourette is the name of a grass also called "Maxima Briza" that was once found in the vineyard. It is a wine that is both clear and lively with notes of almonds, citrus, lemon zest and fennel."
