Tasting Notes

The story

Te Whare Ra Winery or TWR is a small, family-run vineyard and winery whose Pinot Noir and Syrah I have stocked for some time; encouraged by a new customer who asked me to source some of the TWR white wines, I could not not add them to the list after tasting them!

TWR owners and winemakers, Anna and Jason Flowerday, thought that their old block Riesling vines, planted in 1979 and the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough, would be the perfect match with the Marlborough climate and terroir. They were right as they have produced a world class Riesling as they planned. Plus it's produced organically and bio-dynamically and like all the TWR white wines that I stock and the TWR Pinot Noir, it is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

The Wine

I could write my usual detailed tasting notes but I would say that Raymond Chan has nailed it with a great description of this wine. It is a very elegant and refined wine displaying lime fruit and flinty minerality with white floral aromas and just a hint of the kerosene aromas expected of a good old vine Riesling. The wine is definitely dry with good acidity and flavours of lime, apple and minerals - and I also detect crisp pears which kick in on the finish some time after the wine has been swallowed. I classified this wine as aromatic because Riesling is known as an aromatic grape variety but it would fit equally well in crisp white wines.
If you think you don't like Riesling you should try this wine - it's gorgeous.

Food Pairing

This dry white wine is beautiful to drink on its own but it will also pair well with spicy Chinese dishes and other Asian food.

Producer's Notes

"This wine has gorgeous lifted aromas of jasmine, fresh lemon and, ripe Kaffir lime follow through on to the palate. Flavours of fresh lime juice, lemon sorbet and ripe grapefruit with hints of floral spice are balanced by a fine backbone of ripe acidity. This Riesling is a dry style which has excellent fruit weight and concentration to balance the lingering mineral acid structure. This wine is finely structured with great length of flavour.

2016 was an exceptional vintage in Marlbroough, characterised by a warmer and drier than average summer. It has resulted in very balanced, fleshy wines with lovely purity and ripe acidity. This 2016 Riesling 'D' is drinking well now and will also benefit from careful cellaring for 6-8+ years."

"Brilliant pale straw colour with slight green hues, very pale edged. The nose is very elegant and refined with very good depth and intensity of pure lime fruit entwined with white florals and a subtle layering of thirst-quenching savoury minerals. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate is taut and tightly concentrated with flavours of lime fruit, white florals and savoury minerals.

The mouthfeel is thirst-quenchingly dry with crisp, racy acidity, and the wine has fine fruit extract providing a refined line. Flavours of apples emerge and carry with the limes and minerals to a long, elegantly proportioned finish. This is a refined, taut, mouthwatering dry Riesling with lime, floral, apple and savoury mineral flavours and fine fruit extraction."

"The 2016 Riesling D opens with notes of fresh lemons, lime cordial and honeysuckle with a hint of aniseed. Light to medium-bodied with a dry palate and refreshing line of crisp acidity cutting through the intense citrus flavors, it finishes long and pure."

Winery of the Year 2014     Raymond Chan     Dec 2014
"... the Flowerdays represent the modern and young face of winegrowing in New Zealand, making a range of beautifully elegant, exceptionally high quality wines, with the greatest respect for the environment from which the fruit is obtained.

I’ve come across very few winegrowers and winemakers who give so much thought to every aspect of the vineyard, winery, winemaking, how their wines show in stylistic and quality terms, and how the wines are presented in the marketplace, as Jason and Anna. This reflects their passion, enthusiasm, extremely high standards, hard work and attention to detail in creating and crafting wines that reflect their vineyard and region, and their guiding the wines sensitively so that they are expressed with great finesse. At present, New Zealand wines are generally enjoyed for their strong and distinctively clear fruit flavours. It is apparent that our industry must progress towards producing wines which are more refined, subtly complex and textured with the ability to develop, so as to appeal to the increasing and maturing fine wine drinkers of the world. The Te Whare Ra wines are at the forefront of this movement in this country."

From the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough this is a really fabulous dry Riesling, elegant and refined with lime, pears, flinty minerality and just a hint of kerosene that old vine Riesling is renowned for. Produced by organic & biodynamic practices and from an exceptional vintage, this is wine has been produced with great care. If you think you don't like Riesling you should try this wine!
