I am so excited to add this lovely wine to my range of First Drop wines. First Drop's Mother's Milk Shiraz 2018 was named one of James Suckling's Top 100 Australian wines in 2019 & was awarded 96 points; that's just one of its many well-deserved accolades. It's a lovely smooth Shiraz "made for drinking" according to First Drop. The quirky cartoon label might mean you don't take this wine seriously but it is intense, complex, well-balanced and delicious, all you can ask for in a top quality wine which is what makes it such great value.
It's bursting with fruit aromas & flavours - red and black berries, ripe plums & cherries - and savoury meaty & truffly notes plus spices including pepper and cloves. The finish is long and complex; those flavours just keep on coming. The wine is relatively full bodied and the tannins silky smooth. A wine you can afford to drink every day without being an everyday wine!
Recommended with beef - grilled , roast or stewed - and would pair well with steak in pepper sauce. Shiraz is often quoted as a wine to have a barbecues and this one would certainly go well with smoky, barbecued meats including ribs in sweet sauce. Also goes well with most hard cheese. First Drop Wines suggest rump steak, mushroom sauce, chips & salad!
"Not a sledgehammer style, this Barossa Shiraz is made for drinking! Soft, slurpy and textured it is balanced with good acidity, which refreshes the palate and makes you go back for a second / third glass. Sourced from 3 unique vineyards, it is fruit laden, savoury and dangerously easy to drink! It is matured for 12 months in French oak hogsheads to allow the fruit to express itself.
Colour: Garnet red with purple hues Bouquet: A complex nose of dark cherry and blackberry aromas with a hint of forest floor and spice Palate: Vibrant dark cherry and blackberry with a hint of ‘wombat rolled in all spice’ balanced with an even, textural palate with soft, supple tannins."
96 points JamesSuckling.com Top 100 wines of 2019 "The aromas and flavors of plums, smoked meat, raw meat, cloves, nutmeg and berries are sumptuous. Full body, round and polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Yet reserved and focused at the finish. Drink or hold."

"Deepest cherry red. Intense aroma of black fruit as well as a slightly smoky reductive note and the freshness of wild scrubland herbs and black pepper. 'Soft and slurpy' is about right, with masses of sweet black fruit – blackberry and blackcurrant – smooth, smoochy tannins. A wine to sink into. The absolute opposite of elegant austerity but none the worse for that. At the risk of offending those who loved floppy-eared creatures, I can imagine this with rabbit stew. Though Matt Gant suggests rump steak, mushroom sauce, chips and salad. That would work too. At the very end, black olive savour cleans up the finish."

"Rich and juicy in flavor, with maraschino cherry, red licorice and fresh raspberry puree notes up front, plus matcha, dried lavender, star anise and fresh tobacco hints that linger. Despite the generosity of flavor, there’s a light airiness in texture, with supple silkiness coming from polished tannins. Drink now through 2030."

"A meld of fruit from a whopping 15 separate Barossan and Eden Valley vineyards, cold soaked and fermented closed, to capture fruit essences. 8-12 days on skins, the fermentation finished in oak before a further 12 months in neutral French oak. This is an approach that serves the buxom blue fruit notes, grapey intensity and soaring florals very well. A polished chassis. No components in the way of the other. Slurpy, gently peppery and delicious."
