From a cool part of the Rhône, Chateau Unang’s organic crisp dry white wine, Ventoux Blanc, develops complex fruit, herb and mineral flavours from the unique microclimate terroir. Clairette makes for 70% of this blend with Grenache Blanc and Roussanne making up the balance.

The Ventoux region of Provence (which is in the Rhone wine region) can be very hot in the summer but Chateau Unang’s vineyards are 220m above sea level and more importantly are in the shadow of the Monts du Vaucluse, protecting the plots from the sun and the heat. This is an important factor as the cool air and shade prolongs ripening and allows the acidity which can be low in the Clairette grape to remain relatively high. This microclimate and Chateau Unang’s limestone soils with sandy top soil make for a pretty unique terroir which helps develop this wine’s complexity. Clairette makes for 70% of this blend with Grenache Blanc and Roussanne making up the balance.
Scottish owners, James & Joanna King are one of a rising but still small number of independent wine producers in the region aiming for wines with elegance and depth. This white wine meets that aim and at great value too. The wine is showing a real complexity of fruit, herbs and minerality ending with a lovely, long citrussy finish. Plus it’s organically produced and relatively low in alcohol at 12.5%.
The producers say “serve chilled, this wine could be your aperitif or will accompany shellfish. Drink now or keep 2-3 years although it can evolve over a longer period.”

“Straw-coloured with green reflections, our White displays notes of lime, fresh pineapple, box in bloom. It is only afterwards the exotic fruits join the party producing a very dynamic mouth. Finally, our trademark freshness with a twist of lemon zest.”
JancisRobinson.com awarded the 2020 version of this wine a whopping 17 points and described it as “… not flashy, not opulent, not trying to please. You could place this bottle on a noisy, vibrant family table groaning with food and at least one person will stop, in the midst of the chaos, and have a quiet oasis moment with this wine. It’s the kind of wine that loves family, food, bright minds, good conversation.” The 2019 was not reviewed by them but has a similar effect!
