Description
Anima Mea Muscadet 2020 is a beautiful Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie from Véronique Gunther-Chéreau. In fact it is mother and daughter, Véronique and Aurore, who continue the work of previous generations of their family to produce terroir-focused Muscadet. The producers have 75 hectares of vines in the Loire Valley spread over 3 different domaines.
Anima Mea Muscadet 2020 is a beautiful medium to full-bodied dry white wine, not light as you might be more used to seeing in some Muscadets. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine wines are known for being richer and more age-worthy than standard Muscadet. The complex aromas and flavours include stone fruits and lemon with minerally notes and a distinctive but discreet whiff of gunflint. The wine has a really long flavoursome finish.
The grapes for this Anima Mea Muscadet 2020 are from 65 year-old vines at Château de la Gravelle which is known for its unique terroir – gabbro. This volcanic rock lies underneath clay soils, both of which contribute to the wine’s complexity, its distinctive gunflint and mineral notes, its texture and its ageing capacity. Ageing the wine underground on its lees in glass-lined vats for 14 months also adds to the complexity and makes the texture smooth and creamy. Always choose a Muscadet sur lie – on its lees – for this reason. This is an amazing white wine, drinking well now but it will keep and develop for a number of years.
