Description
Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 is quite simply a gorgeous, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. A cool start to the 2021 season and subsequent moderate temperatures meant long, slow ripening of the grapes. This in turn leads to elegance, deep colour and enhanced aromas and flavours. Boekenhoutskloof describes it as having “a more refined claret-like structure with dark fruits and graphite”. Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 tastes primarily of black fruit – blackberries, black cherries and blueberries – with spices, dark chocolate and distinct graphite notes (just like a St Julién claret). In most vintages I am more of a fan of Boekenhoutskloof Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon – I have the 2019 in stock – but for 2021 it had to be this Stellenbosch Cabernet. The wine is silky in texture. It is mouth-filling or as the wine producer says “plush” with just sufficient tannins to make sure this will keep for a number of years and develop further. However it is ready to drink now if you cannot wait – I wrote in my tasting notes in October 2024 “VERY drinkable!”
The Boekenhoutskloof label features seven chairs made from the Boekenhout, an indigenous Cape Beech tree, as homage to “the skills of 18th century craftsmen and their achievements in creating beauty from natural sources, just like the pursuit of fine wine-making.” Marc Kent is the chief winemaker and driving force behind Boekenhoutskloof. He likes to experiment with the unconventional but his principal commitment is to quality. For a stunning white wine from the same producer, try this Semillon.
How to enjoy
This wine is drinking beautifully now and will develop a little more over the next few years. It is very food-friendly but is also very much a “contemplation wine”.
Serve at 12 – 16°C
Producer's Notes
“The wine has a dark, brooding nose of black fruits and sweet spice. Aromas of intense cassis and an attractive perfumy character lends richness. The palate is opulent and velvety with classic dark berry fruits, showing blueberries, plums, mulberries and nuances of dark chocolate and graphite. The wine is full-bodied, with a good lemony acidity to balance the juicy wild berry fruit. Plush, svelte, integrated tannins add complexity to a rich, luscious wine. Black cherry and gentle hints of blueberry crumble linger on a brooding, earthy finish.”

“Very dark crimson. Richer and darker than the Franschhoek Cabernet but also with a stony quality to it, more mineral with a touch of lead pencil. Open and fragrant. Pure, intense cassis fruit but not sweet-fruited, dark and utterly refined in flavour and smooth texture. Compact and very fine tannins, caressing. A powerful and refined wine that carries its alcohol well to a long, plush and attractively dry finish. A pure, elegant and harmonious beauty that has a long future but is delicious now if you want to focus on the fruit.”

“The 2021 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon follows the trend of previous vintages. The wine begins with a dusty and firm profile with broad shoulders and a tight tannic grip. It is softly herbal and spicy, featuring hints of mint, granite and pencil lead, culminating in a still-tight finish. This bottle would benefit from some additional years of aging. After the wine aged for 22 months in 60% new French oak, 34,474 bottles were filled. This promises to evolve beautifully with patience.”
