Description

Candialle Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2014 is produced from 94% Sangiovese with 6% Malvasia Nera which brings perfume and softens the Sangiovese a little. The wine has the typical Chianti Classico profile – red fruits like sweet cherry, redcurrant, plums with violets and savoury notes on the nose and palate. The initial sharp red fruit hit melts into a mouth-filling and mouth-watering sensation leaving you wanting more. Delicious.

The wine may need a little time to open up but take JancisRobinson.com’s advice – don’t decant but just let the wine aerate slowly in the glass – your patience will be rewarded. Candialle Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2014 is a beautiful, very elegant wine. The winery is dedicated to sustainable and environmentally -friendly vine growing & wine production. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation is carried out with minimal intervention in stainless steel tanks to preserve fruit flavours; ageing is in large used oak barrels so the oak flavour is very subtle.

Classico means that this wine comes from the hilly historic centre of the Chianti wine region, the area most suited to vine growing. Simple Chianti is likely to be more fruit-forward and as is usually the case very easy to drink. This wine is much more elegant, a smooth and classy bottle of wine to be savoured rather than glugged. For another lovely Sangiovese, try thisCastillo Tricerchi’s Iuli’O.

How to enjoy

This is a wine best consumed with food. Recommended to drink with lamb, game, duck, goose, steak and other red meats, and tomato-based dishes – think Italian!

Serve at: 14 – 17°C

Producer's Notes

“A classic Chianti profile, with succulent fruit that stands up well this wine’s more structural, savoury elements. It shows purity and balance with excellent acidity and a layered fruit profile with cherry fruit, spice, earth and dusty tannins.”

Awards

2014 was not reviewed but the 2013 scored highly:

17.5 points – JancisRobinson.com – May 21
“Lustrous mid ruby. The genuine article. Vigorous nose with signs of development while it needs to take a really deep breath. Still I wouldn’t decant it because it is fascinating to see it open up in the glass. Undergrowth makes way for layers of savoury cherry fruit and spice with hints of cinnamon bark and liquorice. Fantastic complexity and brooding depth. Tangy and pure on the palate with minerally savoury cherry fruit. Beautiful coating tannins woven into the fruit. Long, perfumed, savoury and salty and a little austere. Highly original.”
