Description
Coto de Gomariz Blanco 2022 is as pleasing as ever! Every year I taste the latest vintages of all of Coto de Gomariz’ white wines and every year I decide that the Blanco is the best and so here it is – the 2022 vintage. Produced biodynamically and organically from 70% Treixadura, a grape known for producing wines that are light, finessed and full of citrus fruits and white flowers, this wine has all of those attributes and more. With just 20% of the wine fermented in oak and no ageing in oak, the wine’s complexity comes from the blend of local grapes – Godello, Loureira and Albariño are added – and from the schist, granite and sandy soils in the vineyards. Godello is responsible for a lot of the complexity, stone fruits and the silky texture.
It is the texture of the Coto de Gomariz Blanco 2022 that amazes me – smooth and silky. The wine is medium to full-bodied and yet the crisp acidity makes it appear lighter and makes you want more. There is a really fruity nose of lemon zest, grapefruit and lime with stone fruits like apricots, white peaches and nectarines. The same fruits develop on the palate and lead to a slatey, citrus finish. It is a delicious wine.
Coto de Gomariz is named after the village in which it is located, an area believed to have been producing wine since the 10th century, making it the oldest wine producing area on the Iberian peninsula. “Gomariz” comes from the word “gomariza” which means branches of the vines which gives a clue to the long history of wine-making as does the nickname, “the Golden Mile of Ribeiro”. Coto de Gomariz focus on Galician grape varieties and on terroir; microplots of their vineyards have unique characteristics and are farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles to best express the terroir in the wines. Coto de Gomariz Blanco is a blend of the best vineyards in the village of Gomariz with a mix of clay, schist and sandy granite soils which give the wine complexity.
I still have some of the 2020 vintage of this wine in stock, still drinking beautifully, a testament to the complexity and aging ability of this white wine.
