Description

Every year I taste the latest vintages of Coto de Gomariz’ wines and every year I decide that the Blanco is the best and so here is Coto de Gomariz Blanco 2021. Produced biodynamically and organically from 70% Treixadura, a grape known for producing wines that are light, finessed and full of citrus fruits and white flowers, this wine has all of those attributes and more. With just 20% of the wine fermented in oak and no ageing in oak, the wine’s complexity comes from the blend of local grapes –  Godello, Loureira and Albariño are added – and from the schist, granite and sandy soils in the vineyards. Godello is responsible for a lot of the complexity, stone fruits and the silky texture.

 

It is the texture that always amazes me – smooth and silky. The wine is medium to full-bodied and yet the crisp acidity makes it appear lighter and makes you want more. There is a really fruity nose of lemon zest, grapefruit and lime with stone fruits like apricots, white peaches and nectarines. The same fruits develop on the palate and lead to a slately, citrus finish. It is a delicious wine.

How to enjoy this wine

Treixadura produces aromatic yet crisp white wines that are a great match for fish and seafood. Given its rather full body, it will also stand up to stronger tasting food; the producer suggests “Scallops and other seafood with some complexity. Fish such as turbot, cod, smoked salmon. White Meat. Cheese.”

Very food-friendly but also great on its own.

“Hugely aromatic, herbal, meaty, fresh and long. This is the white wine that best expresses the “terroir” of Gomariz given that it is made from the most well-adapted white grapes (Treixadura, Godello, Albariño, Loureira) coming from the vines in the parish of Gomariz… with clay, schist and sandy granite soils.”
