Description
As with the previous vintage, Domaine Bachey-Legros Santenay Premier Cru “La Comme” 2020 was the highlight of a day’s wine tasting: as it comes from Bachey-Legros whose Santenay ‘Clos des Hâtes’ I also stock, I should not have been surprised at how much it impressed me. It is generally accepted that the La Comme vineyard, which borders the more famous Chassagne-Montrachet, is the best Santenay vineyard partly due to its south-eastern aspect and its limestone & gravel soils which give structure to its wines. And, as an old vine Premier Cru vineyard La Comme produces really elegant and smooth Pinot Noir.
Fruit aromas and flavours include red cherries, blackcurrants and raspberries; on the palate also some mocha notes and hints of liquorice and pepper. Tannins are smooth and subtle, the texture is really really silky and the finish very long. The Clos des Hates Santenay is also amazing but this is a step up. Delicious!
Six generations of the Bachey-Legros family have worked on this small domaine, the particular character of their wines coming from the old vines. Age means lower-yielding vines and that plus the individual terroir translate into very concentrated grapes. Sustainable agriculture is practised.
