Description
Fatalone Primitivo Riserva Gioia Del Colle 2019 is produced in Puglia, southern Italy, from organic Primitivo or Zinfandel grapes. This is a lovely, full-bodied and velvety smooth red wine that smells and tastes of black fruits, raspberries and cherries with notes of spices, almonds and much, much more. I loved it from the first time I tried it. What is really striking about this wine is the texture or mouthfeel which is really soft and smooth and the very long and complex finish. It is a relatively rich wine but not overpoweringly so given the mouth- watering acidity and the lovely juicy fruit flavours. It is delicious!
Fatalone Primitivo Riserva Gioia Del Colle is certified organic. Only indigenous yeast is used for fermentation and minimal sulphites are added to replace those natural sulphites lost during the wine-making process. The wine is aged in stainless steel, oak barrels and in bottle. Music is played to “optimize the spontaneous micro-oxygenation process” required to help the wine develop its complexity. Music therapy is also used by Chateau Gaby and
Chateau Moya for their wines.
Fatalone Primitivo Riserva was selected among the four most representative wines of Southern Italy in wine bible The World Atlas of Wine by Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson (7th edition) and was described as “one of Puglia’s most consistently complex Primitivos”. The organic and 100% sustainable Fatalone winery is also mentioned among the most “notable producers” from Puglia and the only “notable producer” in the DOC Gioia del Colle appellation area.
How to enjoy
This wine is very food friendly and will particularly suit steak, barbecued meat including ribs, venison, roast chicken and spicy dishes – hot sauces such as Arrabbiata, spicy Asian and Mexican dishes – and rich sauces such as Bolognaise. The producer suggests “Strong flavoured dishes like pasta with gravy, roasted beef, game, grilled meat as well as fish and aged cheese. The Riserva is also particularly pleasant with dark chocolate sweets.”
Serve at: 15 – 17°C
Producer's Notes
“Ruby red intense colour with slight burgundy hues. Scent typical of very ripe fruits and slightly toasted wood and spices, with some balsamic notes. Full bodied, rich in minerality and freshness, balanced smooth taste of black sour cherry and plum tending to velvety with ripe fruity notes of blackberry and mulberry, and spices like clove and cacao. The feature that makes our natural authentic Primitivo of Gioia del Colle unique is the toasted almond aftertaste.”

According to Fatalone “The ITALIVE.IT 2023 Award recognizes products capable of enhancing the Italian food and wine heritage and of artisanal production, not present in the large-scale distribution. The key word that unites the selected products is Genius Loci, the ability to extract the identifying values of a territory and its culinary tradition.”
