Description
Guerrieri Rizzardi Munus Rosso is a bit of a rebel wine. Having previously been Guerrieri Rizzardi’s flagship Bardolino DOCG wine, it was decided to take it out of the Bardolino DOCG appellation (DOCG is Italy’s top level appellation). This was not done lightly but the feeling was that in some vintages the required minimum of 12 months in oak was too much for the wine. Since 2021 a Rosso Veronese IGT, Munus remains a luscious blend though grape varieties and percentages of each varies according to the vintage.
Both the 2021 and 2022 vintages are in stock (you can chose how many of each you would like) and they vary a little in their make-up:
Guerrieri Rizzardi Munus Rosso 2021 contains 40% Merlot giving it a lovely soft texture and red fruit flavours. 40% Corvina brings black cherry aromas with acidity and elegance. 20% of little known local grape, Ancellotta, is used to add deep colour, acidity and some tannins to give the wine a bit of structure and to aid longevity.
Guerrieri Rizzardi Munus Rosso 2022 contains more of that softener, Merlot, in fact 63% which makes the texture even smoother. 32% Corvina in the 2022 vintage still gives heaps of black fruit aromas and flavours. 5% of early-ripening, hybrid grape, Merlot Khorus, adds further depth and colour and fruit flavours.
Produced from grapes selected from the best parcels of the family’s Bardolino estate, Guerrieri Rizzardi Munus Rosso is fermented in stainless steel tanks in order to maximise the fruit-forward character of the wine. Only then is the wine aged in oak for up to 12 months which softens the tannins, adds a little spice to the profile and helps to smooth the texture. This wine tastes delicious. Concentrated flavours of dark cherry, cassis and plums with dark chocolate and spices. It is very rounded and smooth but not rich as there is refreshing acidity to counter the concentration of juicy flavours. Munus means “gift” in Latin and this wine is a lovely gift!
