Description
Maison Jaffelin Montagny Premier Cru from the sensational 2022 vintage is a superb, classic white Burgundy. The hot, largely dry vintage did not suffer from the extreme temperatures of 2018-2020 nor the severe frosts of 2021 and is widely considered to be one of the best in over 20 years in terms of both quality and quantity. With distinct floral aromas like acacia, this Chardonnay tastes more of fruit with flavours like ripe pear, apple and a touch of white peach with Montagny-typical hints of lemon-balm and hazelnuts.
Fermentation is in stainless steel vats to preserve the fruit flavours with ageing in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. The influence of the oak is displayed in the creamy texture and in the nutty, vanilla and toasty notes. Maison Jaffelin Montagny Premier Cru has good acidity which makes the wine refreshing rather than heavy and the finish is very long with a mineral zing.
Maison Jaffelin is one of, if not the, smallest Burgundy houses and was founded in 1816; its wines are vinifed using traditional methods and aged in the heart of Beaune in the 12th century cellars of the Collégiale Notre Dame de Beaune (the beautiful Notre Dame collegiate church in Beaune – if you haven’t visited it, you should!). Whilst respecting the terroir, Jaffelin’s winemaker and native Burgundian, Marinette Garnier, likes to “hand stitch” wines from the four villages of the Montagny Premer Cru appellation, Buxy, Montagny-lès-Buxy, Jully-lès-Buxy and Saint-Vallerin.
