Ogier Lirac Le Petit Paradoxe 2023 is a white wine from the most southerly of the Rhône Cru appellations, Lirac, more commonly known for its red wines. As the producer states on the label: “In the land where grenache noir reigns eternal, this white Lirac is nothing short of a paradox”. Ogier is located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and their aim is to produce wines that are the purest expression of their terroir. In fact, this white Lirac is not dissimilar to a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape but in a more palatable price bracket.

The wine is produced from a blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc grown on pebbly terraces on top of sandy clay, the soils preferred by winemaker Edouard Guérin for white Lirac. Fermentation is in stainless steel at controlled temperatures in order to preserve elegance and the fruit profile. Just 20% of the wine is then vinified and aged in very large oak vessels called “demi-muids”. This is to give texture, richness and depth to the palate rather than to impart oak flavours on the taste of the wine. The predominant aromas and flavours of Ogier Lirac Le Petit Paradoxe are white fruits like apples and pears with some floral aromas and mineral and citrus notes.

Each grape brings its own benefits to the blend. White Grenache gives the wine body, a bit of power and a long finish. Clairette produces very fruity flavours and the floral aromas come from the local Bourboulenc grape. Another paradox of this wine is that it manages to combine its fleshy and rich texture with fresh acidity and fruit flavours. The acidity comes largely from Bourboulenc as neither of the other two grape varieties is known for its acidity. You are simply left wanting more as the finish is really mouth-watering. It is delicious and a really elegant white wine!

Producer's notes

Notes of scrubland herbs combined with intense floral aromas. These sunny wines have managed to retain their wonderful freshness. The wines of Lirac are rich, fleshy and fruity.

“This wine positively exudes joy and serenity! It is oily, powerful and smooth yet with such incredible tension. With its notes of white fruits and a touch of vanilla, the possibilities for gastronomy are endless.”

How to enjoy

This is a very food-friendly wine because of its fleshy structure but it also tastes great on its own.
