Description
Patina Chenin Blanc 2021 is a recent addition to the portfolio. It comes from Goldmine Farm in Swartland, a property purchased by Boekenhoutskloof in 2014. The name Patina comes from the sheen that formed on the prospectors’ tools as they panned for gold in the region. The rich and colourful soil types that attracted those prospectors form an excellent base for the vines – this pocket of Swartland is known for the best grapes in the appellation.
The soils and the careful, minimal-intervention wine-making ensure that Patina Chenin Blanc 2021 also known as Goldmine Patina Chenin Blanc is concentrated yet finessed, textured and well-structured. This is a wine with many layers of aromas and flavours – citrus fruits, pears and apple with beeswax and spices. It has a certain richness but this is balanced by a mouth-watering, fresh acidity. The texture is very smooth with a rounded mouthfeel.
Concrete eggs are used in the fermentation and ageing of part of this wine. Like oak, they allow a little oxygen into the wine which helps to soften any tannins. But the main advantage is that the egg shape and the heat generated from fermentation create a natural convection current. This means that the lees or dead yeasts do not sink to the bottom of the egg or vat but keep circulating in the wine. This additional exposure to the lees adds texture and complexity to the wine. Part of the wine is aged in oak to add a little spice.
