Description

Castello Tricerchi Brunello di Montalcino is a lovely fruity Brunello di Montalcino and it also has the savoury notes that you would expect from a Sangiovese that has a bit of age on it. I have both the 2016 and the 2019 vintages in stock – obviously the 2016 is showing more of a savoury edge to it than the 2019. Both vintages may need to be decanted because of a little sediment but also because the aromas may still need a little time to open up and reveal the underlying fruits. On the palate though they are more evident and carry through right to the end of the lovely long finish – cherries, plums, redcurrants and cranberries together with warm spices, cedar and a leafy savouriness. The wine has been aged in barrel for over two years and then in bottle for a further year before release. Both vintages can be aged for much longer still if you can resist it but they are drinking very nicely now.

Castello Tricerchi Brunello di Montalcino comes from the family-owned Castello Tricerchi estate in Tuscany. The estate is huge but only 13 hectares of the 400 hectare estate are cultivated as vineyards so it is relatively small and in keeping with the majority of winemakers that Wines With Attitude® deals with. Castello Tricerchi works with consultant oenologist Maurizio Castelli and has been tweaking its winemaking philosophy and, amongst other things, switching over to traditional oak casks for the ageing process. The results are evident in its well structured, traditional style Brunello with juicy, ripe fruit flavours and elegance.

Why not try an unoaked Sangiovese from the same producers, Castello Tricerchi IuLi’O Sangiovese 2022

How to enjoy

The producer suggests that this wine is “perfect with meat, ripe cheese or for meditation.” It is sufficiently structured to cope with big meat dishes such as game, goose, steak, braised beef, offal and rustic stews. Mushroom dishes are a good match and milder cheeses including goats’ and sheeps’ cheese.

Serve at: 14 – 17°C

Producer's Notes

“The Brunello shows the personality and nobility of the handpicked grapes from the Vigna del Castello (The Castle) and the Vigna del Velo (The Veil) Vineyards. A stunning vintage delivering extremely healthy grapes at the time of harvest with ripe tannins and skins rich in polyphenols. Whilst youthful at present, the wine’s smooth tannins, fruit quality, harmony, balance and marked acidity are all pointers towards cellaring potential of at least 20 plus years.”

Awards

For the 2016:
17+ points – Jancis Robinson – Mar 2021
“Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Attractive, full, perfumed nose of cherry and strawberry fruit with a peppery tingle and what looks like a hint of oak. Generous ripe red and cherry fruit with a shot of acidity and chewy tannins. Lots of juice and grip on the finish.”

94 points – Decanter World Wine Awards 2021

“Lots of ripe red fruit and roses and sweet red cherries with touches of smoked meat. Powerful with noble tannins.

For the 2019:
17++ points – Jancis Robinson – Oct 2023
“Maturing mid ruby with bricky rim. Generous fruit nose with hints of tobacco and a suggestion of dried fruit that goes away with aeration. Sappy and ripe on the palate and loaded with grainy tannins. The surprise is kept for the finish where it becomes increasingly pure and focused. A little enigmatic and although it seems ready, it is not.”

94 points – Falstaff – Oct 2024
“Bright ruby red. Accessible nose of violets, cherries, oranges, some mocha and loam on the finish. Light-footed and precise on the palate, with clear fruit and finely structured tannins, juicy attack, fine spice in the lingering finale, grippy finish.”
