Devaux ‘D’ Champagne Millésimé 2012 has a lovely golden hue with delicate, persistent bubbles. On the nose, this vintage champagne, made up of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir selected from Devaux’s best plots, offers a vibrant and complex aromatic profile. It has inviting aromas of ripe yellow apples, juicy pear and hints of lemon zest at the forefront and delicate floral notes in the background. Subtle hints of toasted brioche and almond add layers of complexity to the bouquet. The palate of Devaux ‘D’ Champagne Millésimé 2012 displays great finesse and balance. The initial taste reveals crisp citrus flavours, with zesty lemon and tangy grapefruit that combine with the ripe orchard fruit from the nose as the champagne opens up in the mouth. There are also hints of toasted almonds. As the champagne develops further on the palate, a well-integrated mineral character emerges, displaying the chalky terroir from which it originates. The champagne’s maturation on the lees for seven years contributes to its luscious and rounded texture. It is beautifully dry yet with a delicate sweetness, offering a hint of honey and caramelized sugar which add a subtle richness to the complex flavour profile.

The Devaux champagne house has largely been run by women as three successive generations of Devaux men passed away leaving their widows to run the show. The last in the Devaux line, Jean-Pol Auguste Devaux, was without an heir and in 1987 he entrusted the future of Devaux to a cooperative association of descendants of the wider family to carry on the family business. They operate sustainably and for the D collection champagnes including Devaux ‘D’ Champagne Millésimé 2012 they use juice only from the first gentle pressing of the grapes as this is a softer and purer expression of the grapes. Their practice of extended ageing in bottle ensures aromatic complexity and great finesse in this champagne. Made only in exceptional vintages Devaux D Millésimé champagne has been produced only seven times: 1996, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and this lovely 2012 vintage.
