Description
Kopke Dry White Port is produced from a field blend of traditional Douro grape varieties like Malvasia Fina, Gouveio and Rabigato and after fortification with grape brandy, it is blended with port wines from different years, so a non-vintage port. Although white port is quite a recent trend for many countries, it has in fact been produced by many of the port houses for centuries and enjoyed largely in Portugal. It is now often seen here in the UK on drinks menus as an aperitif served on its own or with soda or tonic water. Trust me, it’s delicious!
Kopke Dry White Port has fruity aromas with floral notes. It tastes of fresh fruits like green apples with hints of melon, passion fruit and lime. A slow pressing and fermentation at low temperatures in stainless-steel vats ensure the fresh, fruity and aromatic style. After fortification, ageing is carried out in a combination of stainless steel and oak. The oak creates body and smooths the texture. There is a slight hint of sweetness to this port but it balances beautifully with the crispness of the wine.
Not all white ports are the same. Some are aged in newer oak barrels for longer and can therefore take on nutty, dried fruit and honey flavours. This Kopke Dry White Port however is definitely of a fresh fruit character and is not at all heavy or rich. Crisp mouth-wateringly acidity and a lovely smooth texture. For a more traditional style of port, try Kopke’s ruby Late Bottle Vintage Port.
This port should be stored in an upright position in a cool and dry place away from light and temperature fluctuations. Sediment will form over time and so the wine may benefit from decanting or careful pouring. Once opened, it should be consumed within 2 to 4 months as it can oxidise easily.
