Most Austrian ice wine or eiswein is produced from Grüner Veltliner but I love Weingut Türk Eiswein vom Blauen Zweigelt 2018 produced from indigenous black grape variety Zweigelt, also known as Blauen Zweigelt. Read my ice wine blogpost to discover more about this sweet wine. This Eiswein vom Blauen Zweigelt is a beautiful, pale pink and very elegant, sweet wine with a smooth mouthfeel. It does not taste extremely sweet as you might expect because it has lots of refreshing acidity to balance the sweetness. Flavours & aromas of cherries and red berries with dried figs and more; this is a complex wine – and delicious!
Based in Lower Austria, Weingut Türk is a producer whose philosophy is to produce long-lived, characterful wines rather than “large volume wines for the short-term market”. They practise minimal intervention preferring to let the wines “express the soil, the microclimate and unique vintage character”.
Franz Türk himself told me to try this wine with chocolate and recommends bittersweet or chilli-infused chocolate. It also complements soft cheeses cutting through any richness.
