Marcel Couturier Mâcon Loché "Les Longues Terres" 2017

(0 customer reviews)
£20.50

Similar to better-known Pouilly-Fuissé, this Macon Loché Village wine from Marcel Couturier is complex due to its old vines, limestone soils & oak ageing. It’s a silky smooth Burgundy white wine that combines freshness and complexity – grapefruit, yellow apple, quince, almonds, hints of honey and cream and light mineral & orange blossom notes

Tasting Notes

Sitting inbetween Pouilly Vinzelles and Pouilly Fuissé, Macon Loché shares the same chalky limestone soils and its wines are similar in style but a tad lighter and better value in comparison. Don’t assume the lighter style and the light lemon-gold colour of this wine mean a lack of character. Some Macon Villages wines are light in body and unoaked so have little complexity but this one has the advantage of coming from a plot of thirty five year-old vines and of being fermented and aged at least 11 months in oak before bottling and so it combines complex aromas and flavours with a light freshness and elegance.

Domaine Marcel Couturier, a family winery, has been undergoing conversion to organic & biodynamic farming – fully certified from 2021 and 2022 respectively – so only natural treatments are used and as little sulphur as possible to keep the wine fresh in bottle. Hand harvesting and very gentle whole bunch pressing ensure the delicate extraction of the juices and thus, preservation of aromatic finesse.

The 2017 vintage was a good one for the Mâconnais part of Burgundy (other parts saw intense frosts) and so the wine is complex, lovely and citrussy with grapefruit, yellow apple, quince, almonds, hints of honey and cream and light mineral & orange blossom notes. Plus a touch of spice and toast from the gentle oak treatment offset by fresh acidity. There is so much going on in this wine – and it has a silky smooth texture. A beautiful Burgundy wine reminiscent of a Pouilly-Fuissé.

Food Pairing

Recommended for drinking with fish, seafood including scallops, foie gras, roast chicken, ham, pork, veal, creamy sauces, parmesan cheese, mushrooms, truffle. Generally it is not so good with other cheeses, tomato-based sauces, Chinese food, Thai food and, though it has the flavours to stand up to many of them, curries.

  • Serve at: 12 – 14oC

Awards

2* Remarkable Wine – Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2020
Translated: “This beautiful Mâcon, made from thirty-five-year-old vines, vinified and aged in oak barrels for ten months, comes in a brilliant pale gold colour and reveals intense scents of acacia, honeysuckle, vanilla and toast. The palate appears perfectly balanced between roundness and freshness. Its apricot finish brings elegance and length. Already pleasant, this wine can be kept for several years and will stand up to choice dishes, such as a Bresse chicken with cream and morels.”
