Otronia Patagonian Pinot Noir 2019 is the new name for what used to be Otronia Block I Pinot Noir. Previously produced from grapes solely from the vineyard Block I, Otronia’s best vineyard, it is now more specifically produced from Pinot Noir grapes from parcel 22 from Block I. Single vineyard Pinot Noir means that it displays red fruit, herbal and spicy floral characteristics that distinguish the terroir of this particularly cool climate area. Bodega Otronia is in the heart of Patagonia at what is considered to be the most southern vine-growing area. The cold, dry climate, winds and sunlight intensity and the unique soils make for disease-free organic grapes and a unique profile to the wine, in particular mouth-watering acidity and aromatics.
Otronia Patagonian Pinot Noir 2019 tastes of red fruits such as sour cherries and raspberries with complex herbaceous notes of oregano and thyme. Winemaker, Juan Pablo Murgia, has won a number of Winemaker of the Year awards; his study of each vineyard in each vintage, make for very terroir-focused, complex wines. The wine was fermented in concrete and aged in untoasted French oak huge vats to ensure that the oak influence is more on the texture of the wine than on the flavours. Otronia Patagonian Pinot Noir 2019 is very silky in texture, the tannins soft and integrated which combine to bring a certain elegance to the wine.

“It reflects the deepest and purest expression of the Otronia terroir, through one of the most special varieties, Pinot Noir.
COLOR: Ruby red with violet hues.
NOTES: Pinot Noir with great character, notes of raspberries and cherries combined with herbs such as oregano, thyme, truffle and flowers. Great complexity and finesse in this splendid Patagonian wine.
PALATE: Delicate and persistent structure. Silky tannins, combined with a firm natural acidity, that gives a unique vitality and depth. Of medium intensity, its great characteristics are finesse and complexity.”

“Sweet but tart red fruits – red cherry and cranberry, definitely not strawberry. A stemmy/herbal quality from the whole-bunch component but it’s not dominant. Gives it both a peppery and a floral aroma. As soon as you put this in your mouth, you know you want to drink it not just taste it. Utterly moreish and succulent, with very fine dry tannins and so much freshness. It has the vibrant quality of young vines and the suggestion that this vineyard area has much to give as the vines age. Extremely promising wine and region.”

“Block I comes from the most calcareous section resulting in an expressive nose of cherry, raspberry, liquorice, damp earth, graphite and a hint of clove. In the mouth it’s tense with a good tannic structure and a refined but intense character.”

“Inviting nose of elegant red fruit, palate is textured with cherry and silky, velvet tannins.”
