Description

Rathfinny Rosé Brut 2019 is a lovely vintage rosé sparkling wine from the Sussex PDO (Protected Designation of Origin or what we know in other wine markets as an ‘appellation’). Produced from the traditional three champagne grapes with Pinot Noir taking the lead at 60% of the blend. The balance is 22% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier, all from Rathfinny’s own single-site vineyard in the South Downs National Park.  The site is considered perfect for creating sparkling wine due to its position, its largely south-facing slopes and the light, clay loam soils which are free-draining and similar to the Champagne region’s soils. In addition, proximity to the sea helps to mitigate the risk of frosts.

Rathfinny Rosé Brut 2019 comes from a warm vintage and is full of fruit flavours, especially given the predominance of the two black grapes in the wine. These include raspberries, strawberries, red apples and a hint of nectarines. The natural acidity makes the wine mouth-watering and balances well with the creamy texture. The first fermentation of the grapes occurs in stainless steel tanks in order to emphasise the fruit flavours. Some Pinot Noir is aged in oak in order to enhance the colour and texture of the wine. Once blended, the wine undergoes a second fermentation, like champagne, in bottle. The Sussex PDO rules require ageing in bottle for a minimum of 15 months but Rathfinny prefer at least three years in order to extend the range of complex flavours and smooth the texture as the wine rests on its lees.

A relatively new wine estate, Rathfinny was a working arable farm until 2020 when Mark and Sarah Driver started to plant vines in 2012. Planted in stages, the estate now extends to 93 hectares, all focused on producing the best grapes for English  sparkling wine. Production is sustainable, Rathfinny being the first sparkling wine grower-producer in the world to achieve B Corp status as a business that aims to balance purpose with profit, taking account of the environmental and social impact in everything they do.

How to enjoy

The producer says this is a “beautiful accompaniment to the bright flavours of Thai chilli crab, duck and ginger spring rolls and fruit-based desserts like strawberry soufflé and cranberry trifle.” It is a very food-friendly wine that will complement many dishes.

Serve at 6 – 8°C

Producer's Notes

“Rose gold in colour, the delicate fine bubbles yield a creamy palate of clementines and kumquats, that give way to raspberries and strawberries, with a cleansing quince finish.”

Awards

91 Points     Decanter

“The onion pink colour of the sparkling rosé came from blending a dash of French oak-aged Pinot Noir. Creamy perfume of ripe peach, red cherry and stewed strawberry. More boiled red berries on the saline palate; yeasty red apple peel and white pepper-spiced grapefruit provide complexity, with bright acidity serving as the spine. Spiced nuts linger until the finish.”

“Very pale pink. Smells like red apples and raspberries, but tastes more austere. Dry with baritone depth and elegance. Serious and sophisticated – a sparkling wine for the dinner table rather than aperitif sipping.”
