Tasting Notes

More usually seen in blends to provide structure and nuttiness, Grechetto on its own can produce amazing crisp dry wines like this one. I was torn between classifying it as an aromatic white wine or a crisp light white wine as it fits both categories due to the wide range of aromas and flavours and its crisp and mouth-watering acidity. This is a complex wine despite being unoaked; lots of fruit aromas and flavours combine with nuttiness and minerality. On the nose the minerality is evident as the smell of wet pebbles but the citrus and more exotic fruit aromas dominate. There are citrus, nectarine and peach flavours on the palate with a hint of almonds and hazelnuts. It is a medium-bodied wine with substance and a long flavoursome finish.

Formally founded in the fifteenth century, Tenuta di Salviano is the passion project of Giovanni Incisa della Rocchetta who is the grandson of the winemaker who created Sassicaia, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Salviano and its wines are in their words “a love-letter to Umbria”.

Food Pairing

The acidity of Grechetto makes it a very good food companion. Pair with fish, including oily fish and seafood, and veal or poultry. The body and acidity will stand up to creamy sauces. Also good to drink on its own.

  • Serve at: 9 – 12oC

Producer's Notes

“Crisp yet mouth filling at the same time. The Grechetto di Todi grape flourishes in this territory. Aromas of white flowers, tropical fruits and notes of minerality lift out of the glass. Medium bodied with a nice balance between roundness and crispness, and a pleasant oiliness on the back palate. This is a very clean and pure example of Grechetto di Todi without any oak aging to ensure only the characteristics of this grape and the terroir are represented.”

Awards

95 points – Decanter Magazine – Feb 2023
“Rich aromas with delicate acacia, hazelnut, almond and a touch of honey. Sunny ripeness on a bright palate with floral notes, fresh lemon, cedar, grapefruit and more notes of hazelnut. Appealing, impressive body and structure with a lush, long finish.”

16.5 points – Vinous.com – Apr 2023
“Citrus aroma is nutty with a touch of white blossom. Chewy texture really adds to the appeal of the fresh fruit. Powerful, intense, very fresh but the acidity is counterbalanced by that rich texture. GV.” (Good value)

MatthewJukes.com – Jul 2022
“With electrifying greengage freshness and lovely talcy acidity, this is a thrilling Grechetto, showing that central wine regions of the country can make white wines as dramatic as those from the north.”
