Description

Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner Sandgrube or, to give it its full title, Ried Obere Kremser Sandgrube 2021 is a single vineyard Gruner Veltliner from Austria. The vineyard, Ried Obere Kremser Sandgrube, is a small part of a larger, more general Kremser Sandgrube vineyard and yields its best grapes. Its silica-rich loess soils warm up quickly which helps the grapes develop in the cool climate vineyards and give the wines rich fruit flavours, minerality and body. They also add structure which mean that this wine can be aged for a few years.

It is the grape, Grüner Veltliner, that gives this wine its mid-gold colour. It exudes fruit aromas and flavours – lime, pear and yellow apple amongst  others – and has almond, herb, white flower and white pepper notes (Grüner Veltliner is renowned for hints of white pepper). This really is a complex wine with fruit, spice, flowers and minerality all evident though none overpowering the others. Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner Sandgrube has a lovely rich texture and a long, smooth finish. Many people expect Grüner Veltliner to be slightly sweet and therefore miss out on beautiful dry wine like this one. There are some medium-dry versions – the grape has very fruity characteristics and in warm regions particularly the fruit can show as over-ripe almost tropical fruit. However Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner Ried Obere Kremser Sandgrube 2021 is dry, unoaked with complex aromas and flavours, luscious mouthfeel and a refreshing crispness. You might also want to try another dry Gruner Veltliner, Weingut Türk Grüner Veltliner “Kremser Weinberge” 2020.

Based in Lower Austria, Weingut Türk is a producer whose philosophy is to produce long-lived, characterful wines rather than “large volume wines for the short-term market”. They practise minimal intervention preferring to let the wines “express the soil, the microclimate and unique vintage character”. Grüner Veltliner is the most widely grown grape in Austria. It is known for producing fresh white wines with complex flavours including a mix of fruit and spicy pepperiness.

How to enjoy

The producer says ” Delicious partner to mushroom-based dishes, and recipes that have a rich, creamy sauce. It also pairs well to cream cheese and white-blue cheese and a local recommendation would be Black Pudding Lasagne with cream of horseradish sauce, along with savoury food such as spaghetti “aglio e olio“, possibly even spiced up with hot peppers.”

The wine has sufficient body to stand up to a wide range of foods including Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes, fish and chips, smoked salmon, cured meats, mushroom based dishes, most other vegetables including the often hard to match asparagus and artichokes, herb-based dishes and goats cheese.

Serve at: 12 – 14°C

Producer's Notes

“Fruit-driven aromas of grapefruit and limes, that develop into juicy, mineral characters with aeration, over tropical notes. The Grüner Veltliner Kremser Sandgrube is a model representative of a Loess Veltliner, coupled with the bright spice of white pepper, that shows longevity and very good cellaring potential.”
