(0 customer reviews)
£42.50

With a previous vintage described as possibly the world’s best Semillon, Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2020 continues in a similar vein. Old vine Semillon and 2% Muscat of Alexandria added for acidity and aromatics combine to produce this complex, rich but tangy white wine that is very food-friendly

Description

Boekenhoutskloof Semillon has previously been described as possibly one of the world’s best Semillons and it just seems to get better each year. The old vines from one of the oldest vineyards in South Africa and the alluvial soils add to the complexity, texture and ageing potential of the wine. In Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2020 2% of old vine Muscat d’Alexandrie was added for its acidity and aromatics. Lighter in colour than in some previous vintages, Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2020 manages to combine the richness and waxy texture of Semillon with crisp acidity and aromas and flavours that are predominantly of citrus fruits – lemon and grapefruit though many other flavours are evident like chamomile, apple and lemongrass with hints of nuttiness and minerality. The wine is part matured in oak but at low temperatures so there is little extraction and the effect on flavours is more buttery than spice and toast. The wine has a lovely creamy texture and a richness which is balanced by a tangy acidity. Lovely long and complex finish.

Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2020 is drinking beautifully now and will develop further over the next few years.

Boekenhoutskloof wines are well made using organic principles and minimal intervention; that approach and the use of grapes from old bush vines makes for intense flavours and good structure. Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for making fine furniture. The Boekenhoutskloof label features seven chairs, in the words of the winery “to pay tribute to the skills of 18th century craftsmen and their achievements in creating beauty from natural sources, just like the pursuit of fine wine-making.” Marc Kent is the chief winemaker and driving force behind Boekenhoutskloof. He likes to experiment with the unconventional but his principal commitment is to quality.

Producer's Notes

“The nose is upfront, fresh and inviting, with aromas of mandarin orange, tangerine peel, pineapple and fragrant blossoms and gentle whiffs of angelica, lemon verbena, nettles and spicy oak nuances all adding intensity to the citrus character. Layers of vibrant, pure flavours of kumquat, grenadilla, yellow apple and preserved lemon dominate a lively and complex mid-palate. The slightly savoury, spicy character of the nose follows through with hints of chamomile, marmalade, and beeswax. The wine is fleshy, full, and textured, yet zesty, elegant and balanced, with a beautiful salinity lingering on a pure, taut, slightly pithy finish.”

How to enjoy this wine

Don’t serve this wine too cold as you will hide all its complex aromas and flavours. Recommended to enjoy on its own or with food including fleshy fish, chicken, mildly spiced curries, Thai and Japanese dishes.

“Very pale. Completely different from the 2010 and the 2009. Much more obvious flintiness and a touch of struck match (more deliberate sulphides). Herbal, grapefruit, with the fine waxy texture of Sémillon even with all this freshness. It’s the winemaking that marks the aroma at the moment. Super-smoky on the palate. Full and textured in the mouth, great length. Mouth-watering, powerful, elegant. Long and still embryonic.”
