Tasting Notes

The story

I am so excited to have found, finally, a replacement Picpoul de Pinet as Picpoul has long been one of my favourite light white wines. A lesser known grape grown fairly extensively in the Languedoc region, Picpoul de Pinet is becoming better known these days though still sufficiently rare and of sufficiently good value to impress friends whenever I introduce them to it. The winemaker of my previous Picpoul (one of my very first Wines With Attitude®) started selling his grapes to another producer. Two or even three years on, after trying a number of potential contenders, I discovered that there are quite a few commercial style Picpouls - this classy version has been worth the wait I can assure you! And as it's estate bottled, all the grapes come from the winery's own vineyards.

Since 2013 Picpoul de Pinet has become an appellation in its own right, previously having to label its wines Languedoc AOC. Read more about wine appellations in my blog on AOCs & AOPs.

The wine

A very pale wine, this has been produced without the use of oak and with care to avoid oxidation so that it tastes really fresh and elegant. It's a beautiful, fairly delicate wine with aromas and flavours of grapefruit, lemon, crisp apples and almost under-ripe pears with floral notes. The fruit balances perfectly with the refreshing acidity - cool sea breezes from the Med ensure that the grapes don't get too ripe and lose their acidity. This wine is fuller in body and more complex than some other Picpouls having been aged a short while on its lees. It is incredible wine, lovely and refreshing and with a long soft fruit-filled finish.

Food Pairing

Recommended for drinking with oysters, other shellfish and fish generally. The producer suggests also grilled monkfish and crayfish bisque. It has sufficient body to stand up to a range of stronger tasting foods, even rich cheeses and charcuterie.

Producer's Notes

"The color is a superb pale yellow with bright hues. The nose is elegant with aromas of fresh fruit and citrus fruit especially grapefruit... The balance is zesty and harmonious with great varietal expression: this wine shows how good Picpoul can be when grown on its favourite terroir!"

Picpoul de Pinet wine is one of the Languedoc's best kept secrets. Now a wine appellation in its own right, Picpoul de Pinet AOP is a dry, crisp white wine that is ideal with fish and seafood. It has flavours of citrus fruits and apple with floral notes and a long, refreshing finish
