A lesser known grape grown fairly extensively in the Languedoc region, Picpoul de Pinet is becoming better known these days though still sufficiently rare and of sufficiently good value to impress friends whenever I introduce them to it. Since 2013 Picpoul de Pinet has become an appellation in its own right, previously having to label its wines Languedoc AOC. Read more about wine appellations in my blog on AOCs & AOPs. This wine is estate bottled, all the grapes come from the winery's own vineyards.
A very pale wine, this has been produced without the use of oak and with care to avoid oxidation so that it tastes really fresh and elegant. It's a beautiful, fairly delicate wine with aromas and flavours of grapefruit, lemon, crisp apples and almost under-ripe pears with floral notes. The fruit balances perfectly with the refreshing acidity - cool sea breezes from the Med ensure that the grapes don't get too ripe and lose their acidity. This wine is fuller in body and more complex than some other Picpouls having been aged a short while on its lees. It is incredible wine, lovely and refreshing and with a long soft fruit-filled finish.
Recommended for drinking with oysters, other shellfish and fish generally. The producer suggests also grilled monkfish and crayfish bisque. It has sufficient body to stand up to a range of stronger tasting foods, even rich cheeses and charcuterie.
