Based in Lower Austria, Weingut Türk is a producer whose philosophy is to produce long-lived, characterful wines rather than "large volume wines for the short-term market". They practise minimal intervention preferring to let the wines "express the soil, the microclimate and unique vintage character". Kremser Sandgrube is the name of the single vineyard from which the grapes originate; it benefits from being south-facing and from having 50 year-old vines and mineral, stony soils that produce intense, savoury and elegant wines.
Grüner Veltliner is an Austrian indigenous grape, in fact the most widely grown grape in Austria. It is known for producing fresh, dry white wines with complex flavours including a mix of fruit and spicy pepperiness and fresh acidity. Kremstal DAC Reserve is the classification of the wine, Kremstal DAC meaning that it is a quality wine (Qualitätswein) typical of the Kremstal sub-region and Reserve meaning that the wine "displays ripe aromas, density on the palate and a long smooth finish", which is certainly the case here. To verify the quality, each Qualitätswein is tested and once approved receives a unique state control number which is incorporated into the seal or screwcap.
Like the 2014 vintage this is a beautiful, elegant dry unoaked white with complex aromas and flavours, luscious mouthfeel and yet a refreshing crispness. It is not the palest white wine but it is the grape (not oak) which gives this wine its mid-gold colour.
There are ripe fruit aromas on the nose - lime, pear, yellow apple and a hint of peach and nectarine - also a touch of marzipan, celery and white pepper for which Grüner Veltliner is renowned. The palate is equally complex with stone fruit, pepper, a slight touch of honey and minerality. The flavours are quite delicate in intensity but the texture is really opulent and the finish long and smooth. Everything is in balance here - fruit, alcohol and acidity, just as it should be. Absolutely fabulous or Grü Ve!
This beautiful wine has sufficient body to stand up to a range of foods but it is particularly recommended for drinking with Asian food including Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes and spicy dishes; fish and chips, most other fish dishes including sashimi and smoked salmon, cured meats, most vegetables including the often hard to match asparagus and artichokes, herb-based dishes and goats cheese.
Recommended by the producer for drinking with "Oriental and Asian spicy cuisine, or as a partner to mushroom dishes, meals with a rich sauce or great with cream cheese and Camembert style cheese, and black pudding lasagne with horseradish sauce".
